There are people in the olden days who belived that by beating the drums and cymbals as well as fire crackers to frighten the demon away from completing eating up the sun aand the moon. In Hindu mythology, there is a story about the gods and demons trying to drink the elixir nectar to become immortal. Lord Vishnu was to take in charge in distributing the elixir nectar. The gods were also worried that if the demon also drink the immortality nectar the demon evil deeds will increase multi fold. When Lord Vishnu was not arround, there was a demon by the name of Rahu who had a head of a snake disguised himself as God and tried to drink some of the nectar. However, this imposter was spotted by the Gods, Surya (the sun) and Chandra (the moon) who reported it to Lord Vishnu. Both of them immediatly reported it to Lord Vishnu. Just as Rahu was swallowing the nectar, Lord Vishnu chopped the head of Rahu with a sword. Rahu’s head fell to the ground.
Since the nectar had reached Rahu’s throat, Rahu’s head which had fallen to the ground not only survived but became immortal without his body. Therefore, Rahu always wreak vengeance on Surya and Chandra, whenever he gets a chance of swallow up the sun and the moon which is commonly described as eclipse. Since Rahu does not have a body to sustained the sun and moon, whenever Rahu swallows them, both of them passed out from his throat and appeared over and over again.
Since Rahu became immortal, Lord Brahma accepted him as one of the planets where he is in the north north west direction. However, in astrology it is one of the nine planets in charting a person’s horoscope. In astrology, Rahu is considered to be an inauspicious planet if it is situated in the unfavourable sectors in the astrological chart. It causes many types of obstacles in ones’ occupation, romance, married life, wealth, illness, accidents, failure, etc. However, if it is placed in one prominent sector one would be highly successful, wealthy, lucky and as well as a very prominent politician.

古人，見到天狗吃日、吃月，華人會按照風俗，會打鼓、水桶趕走天狗……。這是民間流傳的天狗吃月、吃日的傳說。
在印度，幾千年來也流傳著天狗吃月、吃日的傳說，傳說中的印度象神烏士奴，掌管著一種喝了會長生不死的仙液，按時分給神仙喝，但嚴禁魔鬼來喝。
有一次，象鼻神外出，天狗Rahu竟然假扮成神仙入內偷喝長生不老仙液。這時，日神、月神見天狗竟敢扮神仙偷喝仙液，馬上緊急通報象神，象神一怒之下趕回，果見天狗在喝仙液，揮刀一砍，頭、身分家。 但是，天狗已將長生不老仙液喝入喉嚨中，身體雖死，但頭部已長生不死，對告密的日、月兩神懷恨在心。
直到现今，天狗仍然很憎恨日神、月神，若有機會便會吞吃日、月。可是，天狗只有頭，吃日、吃月也罷，太陽只是陰暗一會兒，月亮也只是暫失光芒，日、月又從天狗喉嚨跑了出來，大地又大放光明。
